- Honoring Indigenous People
Today we honor indigenous communities. We live on stolen land. We acknowledge the fact that indigenous peoples have suffered at the hands of colonizers on their land for centuries. We realize the privileges we draw daily at the cost of their continued persecution. Today is a day to honor the indigenous cultures, talk with friends and family about the injustices they’ve been subjected to, and create a plan to foster policies that support their current needs while celebrating their strong bond & history with this land. Thank you for always taking care of the land that so many of us have tried to destroy. Here are a few things you can do to honor indigenous folks today: Research what indigenous land you are currently residing on. Learn about the rich history of these people; their many traditions, beliefs, & boundaries as communities. Share this information with your friends & family so that we can be more mindful, & respectful, & proactive about returning their rights that were stolen. Check out https://native-land.ca to find out what indigenous land you are currently living on. Create a plan & commit to VOTE for policies that work to protect and support native communities. - 7 Ways to Offset the Social Distance Feels
artwork by: Mabel Vicentef Anyone else currently mourning the loss of the HUG life these days? In the West, we have become socialized to develop immunity to the collective’s needs. Wherever you turn a commercial, a media post, or an article flagrantly shouting how desirable and necessary it is to maintain your “independence” and HUSTLE to pursue your own personal or dharmic path. This is a story that was built to protect us, to protect our egos from the repercussions of selfish behavior. This is the story that “protects” us from pain, from failure, and from rejection. If we go it alone and if only we depend upon ourselves then the path must surely be cleared as we are the ones solely curating said path, right? Yet, underneath this foundation are many cracks, many questions. Where did the initial idea or inspiration for your path come from? Where did YOU come from? It came from another, and you came from another. Interdependence is unavoidable, and it is necessary. Amidst the tragedy and uncertainty of C-19, the world is now forcibly embracing adjustments we never thought we would in this lifetime. Discomfort, anxiety, loneliness, confusion, and disarray swarm the media and our mind space too. Now, we cannot hide from the darkness as it meets the light. And part of this collective journey is to face this heightened isolation and heightened awareness of what we are experiencing and feeling. Amidst the speed bumps and detours to our individual, life goals we are being nudged at to realize how deeply rooted we truly are in interdependence and interconnection. After all, we are moving through this together, whether four walls keep us separated or not. Thus, the human who rarely experiences loneliness is left to indulge this sensation without a long task list of duties, errands, or goals to meet in order to sustain distraction from our innate desire to be connected to one another, to it all. Scientifically speaking, we are wired to connect, to curate intimacy, to embrace, to co-exist, and to co-create. In the day and age we are living in, we are seeing less and less of this with social media, dating apps, and technology creating an ever-expanding barrier between us. Not to mention the aforementioned task lists, daily goals, work woes, and familial responsibilities. We are blindly losing sight of what makes us human. We are physiologically driven to pursue one another because it is actually healthy to do so with the alternative being really not-so-healthy. Hugging, cuddling, laughing, holding hands, and connecting intimately with others actually lowers the stress hormone, cortisol, and increases the release of the feel-good hormone, oxytocin. When our cortisol levels become too high, this can lead to a weakened immune system, depression, spiked anxiety, and overall fatigue mentally and physically. So right now, if you’re feeling an increase in any of these symptoms, it’s pretty darn normal. Social distancing is not easy when it is expected of you for extended periods of time, even for the more reclusive and introverted. Plugging into social media, zoom groups, and facetime chats might even be making you feel more sad or lonely. Maybe the slowing of productivity or workload is causing some negative thought cycles to flair around your self worth. Or maybe this increase in exposure to media apps is creating a feeling of longing or causing you to compare too much. Life feels uncertain right now without explanation of what is to come next or when this will all be over, and we’re here to say that uncertainty is okay. It’s okay to feel worthy without productivity being apart of the equation. They are very separate, and should not be linked to your overall happiness and connection to self. Whatever it is we’re right here with you, and we want to give you some tips on how you can strike a connection with those oxytocin and serotonin levels to hopefully help alleviate some of the overwhelm and uncertainty. 1. Routine While developing a routine might not actually help to increase one’s oxytocin levels immediately, it can help alleviate some of the uncertainty in the day which will likely lower those cortisol levels in the body. Many psychologists say that creating a routine for yourself can actually lead to better mental health. According to Mariana Plata of Psychology Today, “The reason behind this is that when we organize ourselves and know what to expect, it’s easier to actively work towards counteracting the thoughts and symptoms of any . . . mental health conditions”. Having a solid routine instills good habits and breaks bad ones. If you’ve been laid off recently or your routine has been flipped upside down, you might want to try to create a new, sacred routine for yourself that helps you feel like you have a little more control over your day. It’s easy to feel like your passions and motivations have been stripped from you during a time like this, and being that there is really no running from our current state the best way to remedy is to find your dance with uncertainty. Motivations might look differently right now. Waking up earlier and getting out of the bed might be an accomplishment, and that’s okay. Start by choosing a specific time you want to awaken, maybe only Monday through Friday. When you get up, have yourself a little morning ritual. Make your favorite tea or pour yourself a healthy sized glass of water. Sit on your favorite chair or spot. Take ten deep inhales in through your nose and out through your mouth. Try spending even ten minutes on yourself in the morning. It’s a great way to start your day and something very certain to look forward to. The rest of your routine is up to you, whether it be an afternoon walk, 4pm house cleaning, 6pm journal session, or specific dinner time or exercise time. Whatever it might be, write it down. Hang it on your fridge or your wall as a reminder to honor yourself and your sacred routine. 2. FEEL Allow yourself to feel what you need to feel right now. Try not to over analyze or hyper process yourself into forgetting to acknowledge the actual feeling itself and the experience you need to have with it in order to move through it. If you’re sad, feel sad. Say to yourself, “It’s okay for me to feel sad. Today, I am going to spend one hour and just allow myself to be sad”. If you’re happy to have a break, don’t guilt yourself over it. If you’re overwhelmed, cry over it or exercise over it. Distractions are over-rated and mental health is IN. When we acknowledge our emotions and the root of what we are feeling we can slowly begin to do the real inner work of healing trauma. Try writing about what you discover about yourself during this time in a notebook or journal as well. You might find that it helps you work through some of the harder more complex emotions you experience. If you’re quarantining with healthy family members or a friend, roommate, or partner: hug them. If you are social distancing alone, never fear you just need to hug yourself. We are SO serious. Try it right now. Sit down on the floor to ground yourself. Sit up nice and tall to elongate the spine. Take a deep inhale in through the mouth, and as you exhale wrap your arms around yourself and give yourself a big HUG. Smile when you’re doing it. Deep breathing coupled with smiling activates the release of those feel-good neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins relaxing your body and lowering your heart rate. Hugging those we care about, including hugging ourselves, releases oxytocin as well. So prepare yourself for a FEEL-GOOD frenzy in your brain, and while you’re at it why not say something kind to yourself like, “Hey, I love you. Thank you. I’m proud of you”. Take a load off. You deserve it. Seriously. 3. Silence/ Prayer/ Meditation So while you’re at it initiating your morning routine, seated on the floor nice and tall, breathing deeply… why not stay there for a little while. Five minutes of blissful silence; just you, your heartbeat, and your breath. If you feel like praying, now is a wonderful time to pray. If prayer isn’t your thing, meditation is always an option. Adopt a mantra. Some of our favorites are Sat Nam (meaning “ I am truth”). Inhale Sat, exhale Nam. Also, So Hum (meaning “I am") is a great option, as well as OM. You may also make up your own. Repeating a mantra helps whilst meditating because it helps you stay focused. When your mind starts to run away with thoughts, you can return to your mantra to keep you focused on your breath and staying grounded. Silence is also an option. Sometimes waking up before everyone else in your household or simply sitting outside in silence and tuning into the birds chirping and squirrels rustling up the trees is grounding in and of itself. Meditating for five to ten minutes a day is proven to improve your overall mental health. Intentional and focused breath patterns help to redistribute oxygen throughout the body and brain reminding it that we are in fact safe and stable and grounded. This allows for a stronger foundation of wellbeing and happiness. 4. ORGASM We all know a great way to initiate the release of the feel-good hormones, orgasm. Orgasms relieve stress and help to alleviate pain with the release of oxytocin. Not to mention, they get your blood flowing. This means that more blood is flowing to your brain, which means more nutrients and more oxygen is also flowing to your brain. This means better mental health and heightened relaxation. Many studies have shown that regular orgasms help to put you to sleep as well, and a healthy sleep schedule is a much healthier mind. We understand that reaching orgasm is not accessible for all, but finding ways to pleasure yourself is, and this is just as much a viable option for releasing feel-good hormones. 5. Giving/ Accepting Compliments When we are kind to others and others are kind in return, we release YOU KNOW- those feel-good hormones. Send out sweet compliments via text throughout the day. Have a chat with someone to remind them that you love and care for them. We’ve got free, cute, and funny postcards on our website that you can send to your friends too if you need some ideas. If you don’t have a printer, you can save the image from our Inclusive We facebook page, and text it right over. Allow yourself to accept a compliment in return. It feels good to be kind, and the world needs kindness right now. If you’d like to do more or offer a donation, we have t-shirts and stickers available under our SHOP tab. All proceeds go to the Global Giving Corona Virus Relief Fund. You can also donate directly at www.globalgiving.org. 6. Light Exercise We all know exercise is good for us. It increases blood flow, mobility, and strength. Try going for a walk if you can, or sit on your porch and stretch. Sit in the sunshine, and soak in the rays. Stretch and breathe. Do some push-ups or crunches. It can be simple. It can be complex ; whatever your body is asking that day. It is okay if it varies. Try chair yoga. Try vinyasa yoga! There are loads of FREE Youtube videos packed with work out routines and yoga routines. You are bound to find at least one you enjoy. But most importantly, if you don’t work out or do the wildest, hardest exercise routine of your life right now, do NOT beat yourself up over it. If you need to rest, please rest. 7. Honor Yourself If you need to take a break from screens, social media, and the news: do it. Establishing healthy boundaries for what kind of information you want to consume is adamant for your health at this time. Staying overly plugged in is unfortunately just another distraction from staying connected with ourselves and our true needs. Staying informed is also important for understanding the needs of our communities and collective, but if we are not filling our own cups right now we won’t have much left to give when the world needs it most. So we have to find the balance between staying informed and tuning out when it is time for a mental break. The only way we will fully recover is by taking the time to understand what we genuinely need to be the healthiest, happiest versions of ourselves that we are capable of being; not the version we are told we should be by society or social media. When we realize that on a deep, introspective level, it makes evaluating our world on a collective level a lot more simple. We are in this TOGETHER. - Right Now, Dragons Are NOT Cool: COVID-19!
Photo by: @mothermay_i_photo There's an immense amount of toxic positivity and misinformation surfacing amidst these uncertain times as COVID-19 continues to make its debut across planet Earth. I see social media post after post shouting about their productivity goals and attempts towards something other than utter despair and fear, which is an understandable case. These are uncomfortable times and nothing is certain, and naturally this would induce a very normal amount of fear in anyone involved. Those feelings and emotions are valid, and it is okay to experience them and sit with them. I’m not here, writing this today, to sway you from what you're truly experiencing. In fact, I am here to acknowledge the reality of this pandemic. If your productivity looks like crying and releasing for the day or gathering some much needed rest after many years of being overworked, we hear you and we see you. If you’re chasing your children around and trying to home-school them when you’ve never had to before, we understand it is not easy. If you’re sad or feel lonely whilst social distancing, we empathize and send you virtual hugs. Your experience is valid. Now, I must admit that there is often a stark and magnified contrast between these hyper-active, uber productive social media influencers and CEO's spouting 'encouragement for the day' and 'five tips to reach your goals while on lockdown': they're white, they're privileged, they're white and gold collar workers, and/or they come from money. It's easy to bury your head during a pandemic and act as though everything is “hunky dory” when you're a dragon sitting on your mountain of gold or someone else's for that matter. It is easy to feel like "this too shall pass" when the color of your skin is privilege in and of itself, you’re a cis-gender male, or everything you own and live for is carefully paid for by the immense wealth you have acquired or inherited and/or the job that you so comfortably were able to transition to your couch in your pajamas. Now, none of this is said to make you feel guilty or to entice a specific response from you. What a relief it is that you can live and experience life so comfortably during trying times. However, I would be remiss not to acknowledge that these aforementioned circumstances are rooted within the utmost privilege, and today I write for those without the same privileges for the sake of reality and for the sake of the collective. “The stocks are going to be just fine.” Donald Trump assured us. "We're gonna have to make some difficult trade-offs” Larry Kudlow, the director of the U.S. National Economic Council stated whilst advocating for Trump’s desire to re-open and re-expose our economy so that the stock market might take less of a hit. They mean we will have to trade off an increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths. Why? It benefits our economy to have a healthy stock market. However, many of those benefitting aren’t properly advocating for nor giving back to the oppressed and marginalized groups who are in less desirable situations and have been since long before this pandemic. History has shown us that men’s income levels return post pandemic at a much faster rate than womxn, POC (people of color), and LGBTQ if the latter returns at all. So, a 2 trillion dollar relief bill was discussed and approved as relief for those in need, but who will actually see this money? How difficult will it be to access? I received an email today that I COULD be eligible to receive $1,200 if my household income didn’t make over 75K this last year. $1,200 for those in need isn’t near enough to cover the cost of testing, healthcare, food, and shelter. This is the wool; a sugar coating for a much larger economic problem. On the topic of testing for COVID-19, Trump assured us that insurance companies would be waiving charges for coronavirus testing. However his statement was false, and insurance companies swiftly corrected him stating that “co-pays” only would be waived for testing. There will still be charges for any procedure taken if tested positive for the virus. Right now, we have to prioritize consuming valid information. We have to continue prioritizing what our officials are not properly prioritizing. Our leadership, the media, social media are keeping us hyper focused on COVID-19 only. If we continue to focus on the pandemic only, a cure, a vaccine, relief money, we will be missing the thousands, millions of women put out of jobs and income for their families; forced to care for their children and home school them round the clock (a very difficult, full time job with absolutely no pay) and why? "A pandemic magnifies all existing inequalities (even as politicians insist this is not the time to talk about anything other than the immediate crisis)." stated Helen Lewis in her article entitled "The Coronavirus Is a Disaster for Feminism". Well, of course they don't want us discussing anything other than what they're specifically choosing for us to discuss so that we might remain blinded to said inequalities and inconsistencies within our system. Let us not forget the leaders and POTUS that brushed off this pandemic in the beginning. Let us not make the same mistakes AGAIN and again and again. May we sit in this silence before us and not just hear but listen to the voices of our activist predecessors and take action! It is commonly accepted that those with privilege and with money are more capable of making decisions FOR us or that they benefit the stock market and economy more than the backbone of people that ALSO consume and perform the jobs no one else wants to do to keep these companies afloat. Let’s not forget the many WOC (womxn of color) that have never had the opportunity to go to work because they’re sidelined to child bearing and raising culturally or due to economic stigma. We will be missing the 2 million of the LGBTQ community that work in the service industry, 1 million in the healthcare industry, and half a million in retail that are also completely put out of jobs or are heavily exposed to the COVID-19 virus. What about the POC communities that have been marginalized for centuries so much so that many of them never had access to the education to be able to recover from this sort of economic pandemic or any past pandemic? How many decades of painstaking protest, hard work, and activism are we putting them back now? What about the people without access to computers? What about the disabled with no access to file for relief? What are we going to do to continue offering relief for those in need for months and years into the future? These have always been issues. They’re not new concerns or topics of conversation. They’re simply magnified because of this pandemic. When do we start to collectively advocate for them ALL the time even when the rich, white man is not affected? Aren’t these the people that should most definitely be seeing the 2 trillion dollar relief alongside small, local business owners? How do we make this happen? We stand together. We unite. We speak our minds and continue elevating each other. We VOTE! We show up for our communities. We focus on the reality of things and not what the media tells us to focus on. We protest. We demand valid information, and we stand together. We are in this together, and those of us with vast privilege need to be elevating these communities and putting them first. The media wants us to be in survival mode, but it’s time we operate as a collective healing, creating, curating, and standing together as one. We the people! Peace and Love. author: Emily Indigo
- who *WE* are
inclusivewe (sic) is more than a brand; it is a way of life. We believe all people are equal and should be treated as such. Human behavior is shaped by the experiences we have, our genetics, and possibly even the experiences of our ancestors. When we seek to understand one-another, it allows us to operate from a place of compassion rather than reaction. We know that by opening up communication between people, we can help shift perceptions and increase understanding. Our blog, social posts, and gear all have one goal: increase inclusion. Our hope is that through informative blog posts, images, and quotes, we can spark thoughts and conversations that empower people to understand and respect individuals no matter how different they may be. Be Antiracist ✊🏾✊🏼✊🏿✊🏽 We are all walking around in different worlds based on the varied colors of our skin and the numerous ways we can experience privilege and marginalization. By fostering understanding, we can help to further promote antiracist ideas & action. Now is the time to take a stand for your beliefs in justice and equality for all peoples. Angela Davis said it best: A portion of profits from any Antiracist gear will be contributed to an antiracist organization. Most of these profits will go to the Antiracist Research and Policy Center as it works to create political policies to fight racism. The Future is Feminist 💃🏽👯♀️💪🏾 Gender equality has felt as if it were on the horizon for decades. It is not. We still suffer from deep rooted misogyny in our everyday language, culture, and policies. Our children are being raised to perpetuate toxic masculinity in the way they talk and act. Breaking through this cyclic pattern and into a new era is going to take hard work. We must foster the recognition and promotion of women in the workplace by creating conversations around actual experiences and how to address them. A lot of this hinges at the top as we give our next generation a role model of power and poise in our nation’s leadership. The time is now to vote for women and people of color. The Future is Feminist and your purchases should reflect that. Profits from every item go to a nonprofit organization that is actively promoting gender equality. If you have a nonprofit you think fits this description, please email us your suggestions to sharingiscaring@inclusivewe.com. Love is Love is Love 💕🌈 Respect and understanding of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer folks everywhere is a key piece of our purpose. Let us give the world a human view of what it means to be LGBTQ. Becoming comfortable with someone else’s sexuality as it differs from yours may feel (usually from family and social programing) like a very difficult task. This is often nothing compared to what individuals feel as they try to understand their own sexuality. In the spirit of inclusivity, we want to make people of all genders and sexualities feel welcome, loved, and free to be themselves. This is regardless of how they identify or even if they choose not to identify as anything. Through our inclusion and inspired conversations, we hope to give all people an understanding and respect of gender and sexuality no matter what form it takes. Articles and gear in the LGBTQ space will create a feeling of normalcy around all sexuality and empower people to own it. Profits from these items will be contributed to nonprofits and foundations working to increase protective policies that promote equality regardless of gender identity and sexuality in our government, schools, and places of work. While we will often support the HRC, we may occasionally support other institutions with similar philosophies and missions. Namaste Respecting Your Beliefs 🙏🏽 Respecting another person’s religious or spiritual views and practices is a big part of creating inclusivity around the globe. We are all walking very different paths and we must recognize that someone else’s path, while it may not appeal to you, is often a big part of their identity. It is our intention to shed light on the fact that we do not have to agree with someone’s beliefs in order to make them feel included and loved. Regardless of our religious, spiritual, agnostic, or atheistic views and practices, we are all human and deserve to be treated with kindness and basic respect. We have not yet located a foundation or nonprofit that is actively promoting religious, spiritual, agnostic, and atheist respect. If you have a nonprofit you think fits this description, please email us your suggestions to sharingiscaring@inclusivewe.com. Alllll the Other Differences 👩🏻🦼🙇🏽♀️ The human race is a marvel. We are so similar at the biological level, but when you dive down into individual appearances, views, cultures, and perception, there are countless differences. This can be anything from including people with disabilities to creating an acceptance of those with a different socioeconomic status and even understanding the importance of trauma informed care and communication. Often we will highlight one of these differences specifically to create understanding behind it, but sometimes, we will just provide general content about how to accept others as they are and where they are in their life’s journey. Profits from any gear associated with this group will be distributed to specific organizations depending on the campaign at hand. Intersectionality 💫 Here at inclusivewe, we strive to understand the vastness and variousness of the factors that play into oppression and marginalization. We understand oppression as a simultaneous expression of these stressors, and that one’s political and social identities combined can create unique forms of discrimination. Thus, we have carefully selected a variation of these topics to cover, divulge, and discuss as a means to bring awareness to the corruption of the system which seeks to continue this oppressive experience for many groups and individuals. We believe that by acknowledging and actively discussing how these cultural disadvantages all play into one another simultaneously to maintain this corruption, we might bring to light a method for change. We strive to discuss each topic from an inclusive and intersectional stance, actively working to be void of white privilege, and to have an incredible, intelligent, and diverse team that actively supports this discussion. Short Term Goals; Long Term Vision 👀 In the short term, we will be bringing you new content on how to participate in, promote, and understand inclusivity. We will also offer apparel (shirts, stickers, mugs, etc.) to help you promote inclusivity, to help pay our contributors, and to provide funding to organizations that are fighting for causes we believe in. All profits after paying our contributors for content will go to a non-profit that corresponds with the subject of the gear. Our long-term vision is to create our own non-profit whose mission will be to teach and inspire inclusivity in schools across the nation. And we are **pumped** about this. Don’t Smack a Baby 🥺 We are in our infancy and your patience and opinions are especially appreciated during this initial growth period. We are working to build a team of people from all walks of life to provide you, our reader and consumer of thoughts and ideas, with perspectives from diverse backgrounds that help us all walk through inclusivity with greater ease. As we grow and work to provide you with content and cool ass gear, please be kind. If we mess up, let us know so we can continue to grow with you. And most of all, please reach out to sharingiscaring@inclusivewe.com if you would like to contribute to our content or just have a good idea you would like to share & explore with us. After all, i + u = we.
